Remember don't order you entree at the same time as your appetiser

I first travelled to America in 1994 and we learnt that year, and a few times since, not to order our entrees (what we would call main course) at the same time as your appetiser (i.e. starters) as you may end up with a very full table. My sister will be amused, I'm sure, that having driven this thought into me since our first visit in 1994 I can still get it wrong!!

Dinner at the Grand Floridian Cafe

For dinner tonight (Sunday) we decided to eat at the Grand Floridian Cafe. We had arrived back from Epcot at 6pm and went back to the room to shower and freshen up before going down to dinner at 7.00pm.

The setting of the Grand Floridian is elegant in a Victorian style, and the food turned out to be good too.

Grand Floridian Cafe Dining Room

Butter with Sea Salt - Grand Floridian CafeSourDough Rolls - Grand Floridian Cafe Dinner began with some lovely sourdough roles and what the waiter called: 'Salt Butter'. Salted butter is something that my father likes a lot, and indeed we buy it when cooking food for him, though it is too salty even for our tastes. Here the butter was not salted in this sense, but had lots of sea salt cracked over it. I'm not a fan of butter, but Drew enjoyed both the butter and the salt!

Old South Chicken Wings - Grand Floridian CafeI had however been looking forward to my first chicken wings of the holiday, there is something so quintessentially American about chicken wings that I always enjoy them early on in the holiday. Well today was my chance with 'Old South Chicken Wings' served with a key lime pepper sauce and dill pickles. They really lived up to expectations with a sharp flavour from the lime and a spicy pepperiness from the chilli benefiting from a crunch from the fried dill pickles.

French Onion Soup - Grand Floridian CafeDrew opted for an old favorite 'French Onion Soup' which was exactly as one would expect from the title. Drew loves his onion soups and the richness of this broth, combined with the crunchy onions and toasted cheese topping had him enthused.

Of course, as the title of this blog post outlines, we had been efficient, or at least British, and ordered our mains when we ordered our starters. Therefore halfway through my wings the mains appeared. Note to self - remember this for the rest of the holiday.

Lobster "Thermidor" Burger Grand Floridian CafeThe mains were equally nice with Drew opting for a 'Lobster "Thermidor" Burger' which was a meat burger with a lobster and Parmesan sauce served on a brioche bun with french fries. The lobster had been placed on top of the burger, so Drew who likes to segregate his food, took the lobster off and eat it first before moving on to the meat. Though he said that the thermidor sauce went very well with the beef as well as with the lobster. This was a great success.

Grilled Pork Chop - Grand Floridian CafeMy mains, which ended precariously on the ledge beside the table until I had eaten my wings, was great, when I got to it. It was very simply a 10oz Pork Chop with caramelised onions on top served with cheese and potato croquettes and roasted baby carrots. The carrots were sweet and crunchy, the croquettes were soft and mellow, the cheese combing with the potato well. The chop was delicious, cooked to perfection and every bit of the meat bearing a lovely porky flavour. Served with just salt and black pepper it was fabulous. There was a creamy peppercorn sauce on offer, but I declined that preferring the simplicity of the Pork as it comes.

So we had a lovely meal, and apart from the slight timing issue we were happy and content.

Up to the Club House

We decided not to have dessert, but as each evening the Club House of our hotel has tasters from various menus around Disney World, Drew opted for a visit. I don't do dessert, but had no objection to a coffee which Drew munched on his selection:

Fireworks

We got back to the room in time for the Happily Ever After fireworks display which takes place every night at 9.00pm at the Magic Kingdom. Our Castle View room means we are able to sit on our balcony and watch the amazing display. The music is broadcast through the loud-speakers in the resort, so we had all the richness of the sights and sounds from our own balcony seats.

We headed to bed at 10pm.

Breakfast - Monday

Having woken at 1am again it was a relief to be able to go back to bed until at least 3.30am. At that point it was time to get up to write a blog post and upload photos.

Drew woke up at 4am and we used the in-room coffee machine to have three cups of coffee each.

After showering and shaving we headed to the Club House level for today's breakfast. Today's breakfast, which like yesterday's was lovely. I missed out the picture of the spinach and tomato frittata yesterday, so you can see them today. The devilled eggs are wonderful too:

Breakfast - including the frittatas I failed to photo yesterday

Drew had his second plate of breakfast of a Honey Pecan Pie and a Coffee Cheesecake:

Overall a great success. Time to pop back to the room for our stuff and then to head for the Magic Kingdom, which is today's fun. More about that in the next post.
